8 Reasons Why You Should Start a Physical Diary

For as long as I can remember, I have always kept a physical diary. The idea of pouring the contents of my schedule out onto my mobile has never appealed to me. There's just something about the digital aspect of it that completely puts me off. You can't add your own flair to your entries, there's really no room for journaling or emotion, and once the event has happened, it more or less disappears into your phone history forever. A physical diary is an official, and tangible, record of your year.

I remember several years ago listening to the podcast 'Serial'. One of the opening lines was 'If I were to ask you where you were and what you were doing 3 weeks ago, could you recall it?' - the suggestion being that most of us likely couldn't. But that stumped me, because I knew I absolutely could remember, because I had it all written down, movement by movement, of exactly where I was and exactly what I did. And from reading the words I'd written down, it triggered memories of other happenings and nuances from that day in my short term memory that I'd otherwise have likely forgotten.

Your diary is proof of your life, what is important to you, how you feel, who you are. They've been incomparably useful to historians for discovering information about our human past, can be your greatest companion and support in recovering from major life events, are brilliant prompts and reminders to take action, and they're beautiful too.

If you're still not convinced, here's our top 8 reasons to kickstart your 2025 by using a physical diary;
