Making decorative orange slices this Christmas
As the days grow shorter and the festive season settles in, there’s something wonderfully comforting about filling your home with the scent of oranges and spices. One of my favourite Christmas traditions is making decorative orange slices. Not only do they add a rustic, natural charm to your festive décor, but the process of creating them is as soothing as the result is beautiful. Whether you use them to adorn your tree, wreaths, or gifts, these little slices of festive joy are a perfect way to embrace the season.
Here’s how to create your own:
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
You’ll need a few oranges, a sharp knife, a cutting board, and some parchment paper. A cooling rack or baking tray will also be handy. For added festive flair, you might want to pick up some cinnamon sticks, star anise, or ribbon to use when decorating with your finished slices.
Step 2: Slice and Prep
Preheat your oven to a low temperature, around 100°C (210°F). Carefully slice the oranges into thin, even rounds - about 5mm thick works best. Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture, which will help them dry out faster in the oven.
Step 3: Bake Low and Slow
Lay the slices flat on a parchment-lined tray or directly on a cooling rack (the latter allows air to circulate better). Pop them in the oven for about 2-3 hours, flipping halfway through. Keep the oven door slightly ajar to let moisture escape. Your home will be filled with the most delightful citrusy aroma!
Step 4: Cool and Decorate
Once your slices are dried and cool to the touch, they’re ready to use. Thread twine through the centre for ornaments, or pair them with greenery for wreaths and garlands. They also make gorgeous, fragrant accents for wrapped gifts.
Making orange slices is a simple, mindful activity that perfectly captures the spirit of the season - taking time to create something beautiful and meaningful. So, pop on a Christmas playlist, brew a cup of something warm, and enjoy this moment of festive creativity.
What a soothing, relaxing addition to Christmas. Great for times when one feels overwhelmed.
