How to start writing letters again (even if it’s been years)

There’s something about autumn that makes us want to slow down. The evenings draw in, the air turns crisp, and there’s a comfort in curling up with a warm drink and a favourite jumper. It’s also the perfect season to return to gentle rituals we may have left behind - like writing letters.

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive from people in our pen pal club is ‘what do I write in my letters?’, and so we’ve put this post together to give those of you who feel a little daunted by writing a helping hand.

If it’s been years since you last put pen to paper, don’t worry. Letter writing is like a conversation with a dear friend: once you begin, the words find their way. Here are a few simple steps to help you ease back into the rhythm of letter writing this autumn.

Gather your tools

You don’t need much to start writing again - just paper, an envelope, and a pen. But choosing stationery that feels beautiful or seasonal can make the process even more inviting. A sheet of autumn-hued paper or a card decorated with falling leaves instantly sets the tone and makes the experience feel special.

Create a cosy atmosphere

Letter writing thrives in moments of quiet. Light a candle, brew a cup of tea, and sit by the window or at your favourite desk. Embrace the slowness - let the act of writing become part of the comfort of the season, much like baking something warm or taking a walk through crunchy leaves.

Start simply

If you feel unsure of what to say, begin with the everyday. Share what the season looks like where you are: the colours of the trees, the food you’re cooking, or how the shortening days are shaping your routine. Small details bring warmth and life to your letters.

Ask gentle questions

Letters are conversations. You might ask your recipient about their favourite autumn memory, what book they’re reading, or how they plan to celebrate the season. Questions keep the exchange flowing and make it easier for your pen pal to write back.

Embrace Imperfection

A letter doesn’t need to be polished. Crossed-out words, doodles in the margins, even a little smudge of tea - these are what make letters so human and heartfelt. Don’t overthink it. Your recipient will cherish the time and thought more than perfect prose.

A season for slowing down

Autumn reminds us to gather inwards, to notice the beauty in small, fleeting moments. Writing letters is one of the simplest ways to capture that - a way of pausing, reflecting, and sending a piece of your world into someone else’s hands.

So why not pick up a pen this season? Whether it’s a postcard, a page of notepaper, or a carefully chosen greeting card, your words will carry warmth that lasts far longer than the autumn leaves.
